Fun Songs for Civics Class

Posted under Games We Love To Play, Love To Learn - Feb 20th, 09

We have been attending civics classes for over a year. We are always blessed by meeting with and hearing from our fellow civil servants. A few days ago, we were asked to do the music at civics class (which was Wednesday). It was fun preparing for it as a family. We love history and singing. We all learned the Last Names of the Presidents Song (to the tune of “Yankee Doodle”).  I haven’t been able to find out who came up with this great idea, but here it is if you want to print it out:

The Last Names of our Presidents sung to “Yankee Doodle”

Washington, Adams,

Jefferson, Madison,

Monroe, Adams, Jackson…

Van Buren, Harrison,

Tyler, Polk, Taylor, Fillmore,

Pierce, Buchanan, Lincoln…

Johnson, Grant, Hayes,

Garfield, Arthur,

Cleveland, Harrison, Cleveland…

McKinley, Roosevelt,

Taft, Wilson, Harding, Coolidge,

Hoover, Roosevelt, Truman…

Eisenhower, Kennedy,

Johnson, Nixon,

Ford, Carter, Reagan,

Bush, Clinton, Bush.

Obama is the 44th President of the U.S.A.

(We added this new ending)

We also sang the “Fifty Nifty”, which names all 50 states.

Both of our speakers were judges. One of them encouraged us to “remember the former days,” and he gave us an excellent quote:

“A nation which does not remember what it was yesterday, does not know what it is today, nor what it is trying to do. We are trying to do a futile thing if we do not know where we came from or what we have been about.”
—Woodrow Wilson

Another excellent quote:

Proverbs 14:34 Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin [is] a reproach to any people.
